October Safety Topics: 8 Toolbox Talks for Fire, Ergonomics and Drills

4 weeks · 8 talksFree to use and print

TL;DR

The strongest October safety topics ride on the month's big observances: Fire Prevention Week, National Ergonomics Month, the Great ShakeOut drill and National Protect Your Hearing Month. This plan gives you two toolbox talks a week for four weeks, covering extinguishers and fire prevention, early signs of strain, securing cylinders and storage, and hearing protection.

October toolbox talk plan: 4 weeks, 8 talks

Two short talks a week. Each title opens the full talk with talking points, crew questions and a printable sign-in sheet.

  1. Week 1

    Fire Prevention Week

NFPA's Fire Prevention Week falls in early October, so start the month with what to do in the first minute of a fire.

    • Fire Extinguishers

Extinguishers are for small fires, used by trained people, without taking risks.

    • Fire Prevention

Most fires start from everyday sources that can be controlled.

  2. Week 2

    Ergonomics Month: early strain

October is National Ergonomics Month, a good moment to ask crews where they ache and which reaches they make all shift.

  3. Week 3

    ShakeOut: secure what falls

The Great ShakeOut drill in mid-October is a good prompt to check that gas cylinders are secured upright and heavy items are stored low on racks.

  4. Week 4

    Hearing and desk setup

National Protect Your Hearing Month covers the noisy jobs, and an ergonomics talk for desk-based staff rounds off the month.

Safety observances in October

  • Fire Prevention Week

Early October (October 4-10 in 2026) · National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

The 2026 theme is safe charging of lithium-ion batteries, so add charging stations for tools and devices to the week 1 fire extinguisher talk.

  • National Ergonomics Month

Every October · Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES)

Use it to launch the week 2 talk on spotting early signs of strain before they become injuries.

  • Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill

Mid-October (Thursday, October 15 in 2026) · Great ShakeOut, with state emergency management and the National Weather Service

Join the drill, then use the week 3 talks to walk the floor for cylinders, racks and shelves that could fall.

  • National Protect Your Hearing Month

Every October · National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)

It leads straight into the week 4 hearing protection talk on fitting earplugs and earmuffs properly.

October safety topics practically choose themselves, because the month is packed with observances. NFPA's Fire Prevention Week opens it, HFES names October National Ergonomics Month, the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill lands in mid-October, and NIDCD marks National Protect Your Hearing Month. That gives every week a ready-made hook.

This plan turns those observances into eight short toolbox talks, two a week. Each one links to a full script in our safety talk topic library.

Why do these October safety topics fit the month?

Fire Prevention Week. NFPA's 2026 campaign, "Safe Charging Is a Superpower", is about lithium-ion batteries. Its tips translate directly to the workplace: use the charger approved by the manufacturer, charge on a hard surface, unplug when charging is done, and charge large items like power tools outside where possible without blocking exits. Pair that with a refresher on using a fire extinguisher and on everyday fire prevention.

National Ergonomics Month. OSHA describes ergonomics as fitting a job to a person, and says it reduces the number and severity of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). It also notes that work-related MSDs are among the most frequently reported causes of lost or restricted work time. Start with the early signs of strain, because aches and tingling reported early are far easier to fix.

Drills and hearing. The ShakeOut gives you a reason to practice drop, cover and hold on in the same week as millions of others, then check what in your workplace could fall or tip over. NIDCD warns that long or repeated exposure to sound at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss, and that the louder the sound, the faster the damage happens.

How should you run your October toolbox talks?

Keep each talk to about five minutes and hold it where the hazard is. Gather at a charging station for the fire talk and at a busy workstation for the ergonomics talks.

During Fire Prevention Week, walk the floor and check where tools, phones and scanners are charged. Look for chargers on soft surfaces, extension cords run across exits, and batteries that are swollen or hot.

For Ergonomics Month, ask each crew to name the task that leaves them sorest at the end of a shift. Then score it. Our free REBA calculator gives you a structured posture score, and a job safety analysis builder helps you record the steps and the fixes.

In ShakeOut week, walk the floor with the crew and look for unsecured gas cylinders, overloaded or damaged racking, and heavy items stored up high.

Close the month with hearing. OSHA says noise is likely a problem if people have to shout to be heard by a coworker an arm's length away. If that sounds like any of your areas, run the hearing protection talk on the spot.

What seasonal tips should supervisors share in October?

Use these reminders alongside your safety topics for October:

  • Charging: Stop using any battery that feels very hot, swells, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds, as NFPA advises.
  • Exits: Never block an exit with charging equipment, pallets or seasonal stock.
  • Strain: Treat discomfort that lasts after the shift as worth reporting, not something to push through.
  • Noise: Hearing damage from noise can be permanent, according to NIDCD, so fit earplugs properly every time.

Get ready for November

Shorter days, the end of daylight saving time and the first cold snaps arrive next month. Use the last October toolbox talk topics to check that outdoor lighting, walkways and winter gear are ready before they're needed.

Frequently asked questions

What are good October safety topics?

Build the month around its observances: fire extinguishers and fire prevention for Fire Prevention Week, early strain and awkward reaches for National Ergonomics Month, securing cylinders and storage for the ShakeOut drill, and hearing protection for Protect Your Hearing Month.

What is the Fire Prevention Week theme for 2026?

NFPA's 2026 theme is "Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower", which focuses on everyday charging habits that reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.

How loud is too loud at work?

NIDCD says long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss, and the louder the sound, the less time it takes. Sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss.

Do we have to take part in the Great ShakeOut?

No, it's voluntary. It's a free, organized chance to practice drop, cover and hold on and test your evacuation plan alongside millions of other participants.
